The manual says you need either the app or desktop software to overlay the data (p6 here - PDF). I may be wrong, but I don't think you can do that in camera. data is embedded in the original video file for you to use if you want but it isn't like the date stamp on photos that is permanently visible. It all depends what you want to do with your video recordings. The Desktop equivalent is a whole different thing & is a much more capable piece of software. I note that DCR describes the App as "in the ‘functional’ category – but definitely not something I love".

Why not find the app & see if it does the stuff you want. I just have no experience, as I have the original Virb which only talks to my PC (via USB), so can't comment further. You don't need a computer, you can do stuff with the Virb Edit app on an iPhone. It isn't updates on the camera you need (although there may be some).
